The Best Toys for Babies 0-3 Months

For many parents, it may seem overwhelming when figuring out what developmentally appropriate toys they should buy/register for their babies. From the very beginning, babies are constantly soaking in information from the world around them, and play is a valuable way to help them grow and learn. Playtime is extremely important for your little one as they begin to develop their motor skills, spatial awareness, sensory integration and as well as coordination. Below is a list of my recommended toys for your infant ages 0-3 months.

Activity Mat/Gym

Floor time is so important for your little one and tummy time is essential when it comes to your baby developing a wide range of skills. A fun activity mat keeps your baby engaged whether they’re on their tummy, back or crawling. This mat features bright colors, a detachable book, high contrast toys, a self-discovery mirror and so much more. The toys are detachable and can hook onto your carseat or stroller for on the go. The fun doesn’t stop once they turn 1, you can fold up the sides for a toddler friendly ball pit!

Mirror

This folding tummy time mirror by Baby Einstein is a great way for your little one to enjoy seeing themselves as well as watch your facial expressions when looking in the reflection with them. It also comes with high contrast image cards and a ring making it easily attachable to a carseat or stroller.

High Contrast Image Cards

Time spent looking at high contrast images helps with the cognitive development of your baby. These black and white images are a way to strengthen your babies eyesight as their retinas aren’t fully developed yet. Start with simple cards first, and as your baby loses interest you can work your way up to more complex cards. These are great for using during tummy time and are easy to slip in your diaper bag for when you’re out.

Books

Your 0-3 month old won’t be reaching for book pages just yet, but they will be in a couple more months! Touch and Feel books are a wonderful way to engage your baby in the magic of books and help them to explore. Babies love to look at large, colorful images and hear you talk to them about what they see. Reading books together is an incredible way to bond with your baby, starting at the newborn stage.

Wrist and Foot Rattles

As a newborn, a baby is unable to grasp and shake a rattle just yet. These soft wrist and foot rattles are a perfect way for your baby to play while learning body awareness, strengthening their eyes and also cause and effect.

Soft Rattles

Although your little newborn won’t be able to hold this toy on their own at 0-3 months, they will love watching you hold it up for them to gaze at and and enjoy listening to you shake it. The wings make a crinkling sound and double as a fun texture to nibble on when they begin teething. The O shape makes it easy to hold and shake as they get older.

There are many other ways for your 0-3 month old to play including:

  • Bath time
  • Infant massage
  • Walks in the stroller
  • Taking “backyard tours” (and house tours!)
  • Face to face “conversations” with you. They love your face and voice and listening to you talk to them is so much fun!
  • Sing songs
  • Imitate their voice/sounds and facial expressions
  • Gently sway/dance with them to relaxing music or lullabies

I hope you’ve found this post helpful in figuring out what toys to get your little one as well as some “toy free” ways to play and have fun with your baby!
